I’ve shared a bit on social media about our move but honestly haven’t had a moment to sit down and write a proper post discussing our move to Texas, the reasons why, and what this means for Whimsy going forward. I thought it was a good opportunity to share these gorgeous photos of my family taken by my very talented friend, Amy Caroline Photography, during our final weeks as Coloradans – so enjoy these Flatiron views!
First, a little history: I moved to Denver from Houston back in 2011 to be with my then boyfriend, Steven, after he had accepted a job there the year before. We dated long distance for a year and during that time I fell in love with the mountains as well as the vibe of the city and decided I needed to be in Colorado, even if my relationship with this boy didn’t work out. But after 9 years together, a wedding, and a baby (or two), I think its safe to say it’s working out! We have LOVED living in Denver – the laid back culture, exploring countless breweries, sneaking off to the mountains for a new hike, the “urban” lifestyle that only a small city can offer, the charm of our neighborhood and renovating our 1893 home – the list can go on and on.
But after having our darling daughter, Evelyn, in 2018, we realized that raising a child without the nearby help and support of our families and our group of childhood friends (who we are so lucky to still be so close to!) is just plain hard! The old saying is true – “It takes a village to raise a child.” The cost of babysitters and childcare, balancing adult time with kid time, cost of living – were all factors that lead us to the difficult decision that despite our love of Colorado, Texas is just where we need to be for this chapter in our lives as we raise our children. Yes, children, plural! I am happy to report that I am pregnant with baby #2 and due in May! We found out after we had already made the decision to move, but it really only reinforced the need to return to our “village” with a second little one running around!
We officially made the move at the end of September and are finally starting to feel a bit more settled in Katy, Texas – right outside of Houston – where Steven and I both grew up. We are happy to report that we are constantly surrounded by family and our friends who love like family – just like we had hoped!
So what does this mean for Whimsy? Really, nothing is changing! I’ve scaled down a lot since becoming a Mommy – focusing on our Etsy Shop of pre-designed Collection Suites and only taking on a select number of more customized wedding projects each year. I am still taking on that workload from Texas – accepting new orders via Etsy and happy to work with any Colorado couples. The only small difference is that if you’re located in Denver your order will be shipped instead of delivered or picked up (so pretty much the same as all the other out of state couples I’ve worked with throughout the years).
I do plan on adding some new Collection Suites to my portfolio that focus on more common Texas or Southern wedding themes, and working less on developing new mountain ideas for the Collection. Be on the lookout for new work this Spring and shoot me an email if you have any ideas for themes for these new invitation suites!
